Day 2 - Bungle Bungle, Beehive Domes & Cathedral Gorge Tour

Join Australia’s major tourism award winner, Aviair, on a spectacular scenic flight taking you over Lake Argyle, the Ord River, Bow River and Bungle Bungle Range.

Today your adventure begins with a scenic flight departing Kununurra passing over Lake Argyle, the Ord River Irrigation Area, Carr Boyd and Osmand Ranges, Ord and Bow Rivers and Bungle Bungle Range. Your plane will land at the remote and unsealed Bellburn Airstrip in Purnululu National Park where you will be met by your experienced guide.

From here you will be driven in an air-conditioned 4WD vehicle to the beginning of your guided walk. Your guide will lead you on a moderate 3km walk throughout the famous eroded towers and beehive-shaped domes on the Domes Walk.  Head towards Cathedral Gorge, where you can walk alongside towering cliffs which create phenomenal natural acoustics within the Gorge.  Refuel with a tasty picnic lunch after a morning of exploring. You will then head out along the rocky creek bed of Piccaninny Creek, which only flows during periods of high rainfall.

To top off your first day exploring Purnululu, finish with an 18-minute scenic flight by HeliSpirit over the Bungle Bungle. The perfect option for a snapshot of the Bungle Bungle Range, this flight begins at the southwest end of the Bungle Bungle Range at Y Gorge before flying across the top of the enormous massif to the mouth of the spectacular Piccaninny Gorge. Continue along the southern face of the range, following Piccaninny Creek. Here, you can view the mouth of Cathedral Gorge and fly over the famous orange and black striped sandstone beehive shaped domes.

You might want to upgrade to a 30-minute flight instead!

After a day of exploring, relax in your cabin or by the pool at Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge, and take in a beautiful East Kimberley sunset.  Dinner is served at the Lodge at approx. 6:30pm, and can be eaten either inside the lodge dining room, or under the stars in our alfresco dining area.

Overnight: Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge – Ensuite Cabin

** Morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea & dinner included

Day 3 - Echidna Chasm & Northern End Tour

After breakfast heralded by birdsong, your guide will drive you to the northern area of Purnululu. Your walks today will take you into the extraordinary Echidna Chasm and the northern walks. Spend a second night at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge.

This morning enjoy a delicious breakfast before embarking on your Northern Tour of Purnululu National Park for a different view of the Bungles.

Today’s tour will take you through Echidna Chasm and the northern end of Purnululu National Park. This begins with a 45-60 minute scenic 4WD trek along the western side of the Bungle Bungle Range.  Follow your local guide along a rocky path nestled between cliffs into Echidna Chasm.  At points, this path can narrow to a width of less than 1.5 metres. On either side of you, towering walls of orange stone scattered with Livistona palm trees will reach skywards, seeming as though they are lit from within.

As this walk requires a significant amount of climbing over boulders and navigating ladders, we advise this tour is suitable only for those with full mobility.  You will enjoy a tasty picnic lunch whilst enjoying more spectacular scenery of Purnululu National Park.

In the afternoon, return to Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge to relax after another day of amazing adventures.

As the old saying goes, “red sky at night, sailors’ delight” and there’s no better way to experience a breath-taking Lake Argyle sunset than out on the water! On this popular sunset cruise, explore the rugged northern end of Lake Argyle while navigating through some of the lake’s 90 islands and inlets.  Your Skipper will entertain and inform with commentary on the natural history and development of Lake Argyle, the Ord River Irrigation System and the Aquaculture Industry.  You’ll encounter Rock Wallabies, Freshwater Crocodiles, Wallaroos (Euros) and the diverse array of birdlife that call Lake Argyle home.

You’ll be delighted and awed by the Archer Fish that shoot water up at your hand with amazing precision. You’ll watch a Catfish feeding frenzy (also known by the fancier term of ‘Silver Cobbler’).

As the sun sinks behind the glorious Carr Boyd Ranges, you’ll enjoy a swim in the Lake with a complimentary drink and nibbles to make the most of this magic time of day.  With rugged red cliffs reflecting into the blue water, Lake Argyle is the ultimate place to catch the last golden rays of the Kimberley sun.

Day 6 - Mitchell Falls

The North Kimberley with its untouched, remote coastline hides its secrets well until you take to the air. This full day plane, hike and helicopter combination tour covers an area the size of central Europe.

An early start with a complimentary pick up from at approximately 5:15am by Aviair.  A light breakfast is offered on check-in at the terminal.

Your scenic flight will depart at 6:00am taking you over the Ord River Irrigation Area, Carlton Hill Station, Wyndham and the Cambridge Gulf before reaching the coast.

Along the way you will witness stunning views of beautifully patterned mud flats near Wyndham, as well as the magnificent King River, Berkeley River Gorge, King George Falls and Kalumburu. This flight touches down at the remote Mitchell Plateau Airstrip where you disembark and board HeliSpirits’ helicopter that will transfer you from the airstrip to the beginning of the walk to the Mitchell Falls.

Follow your tour guide on a challenging 4.5km hike to the stunning Mitchell Falls.  Experience the different eco systems the plateau has to offer, view ancient aboriginal rock art and marvel at Little and Big Mertens falls. The hike can be challenging at points, with uneven tracks and river crossings, so there is an option to take a helicopter transfer straight from the airstrip to the falls at no additional cost.  This must be booked in advance though.

Once arriving at the falls, you will have time to marvel at their beauty.  Take a swim in the Mitchell River above the falls and enjoy a fresh picnic style lunch.

You will be transferred via helicopter from the top of the falls back to the airstrip, where you will board your return flight to Kununurra.  On the flight home, you will pass over King Edward River,  remote cattle stations and the Cockburn Ranges before touching town in Kununurra.

Accommodation: Freshwater Apartments – One Bedroom Apartment

** Meals: Light breakfast and a packed picnic lunch and snacks included

Day 7 - The Ord River

Have a lay in this morning and depart late morning for a return cruise up the Ord River, enjoying the pristine waterway and stunning gorges accompanied by expert commentary.

Cruising the 55km to Lake Argyle, you will marvel at the spectacular scenery, wildlife, flora and fauna found along the way and maybe even spot a crocodile! Remaining on the boat at the base of the Ord Top Dam for a view of the Ord Hydro Power Station.  From here, cruise back towards Kununurra, stopping for afternoon tea at the secluded riverside camp.

Scenic photographers will appreciate the contrast in colours as the light changes the way the gorges and ranges look on the return journey. Return you to your Kununurra accommodation at around 6.00pm after enjoying an East Kimberley sunset on board the boat.
